Hiring a bike for a touring holiday is the ultimate test ride, one Canadian tour company provides its customers with Triumphs

Ten years ago the Rocky Mountain Motorcycle Holiday company was formed in Whistler, near Vancouver. They provide luxury trips with the stunning scenery of Canada and North America as a backdrop.

The Douglas family has run the company since 2006, with son Brandon - as head guide - being involved with RMMH since its inception. Tyler says: ‘We were originally exclusive only to Triumph bikes. Mike Ciebien created the company as he set to attract a key demographic: Europeans (mainly Brits) with comfortable disposable incomes who wanted an all-inclusive luxury touring holiday in the Rockies of Canada. Triumph was the bike he chose to do this with and it seemed to work well.’ Originally Ciebien also felt that Triumph would be a good ‘nonthreatening’ brand for Americans who may have been uncomfortable with any ‘rice burners’ from Japan.

Forming a close relationship with Triumph, RMMH organized regular RAT (Riders Association of Triumph) events, including their first tour of the season, the ‘Western Canada in a Week’ tour. Tyler explains: ‘We marketed this tour exclusively to RAT members and provided special discounts for them to come out. This promotion lost steam over the last couple years as RAT disbanded and became segregated. However now that Torque Magazine has been replaced by Triumph they’ve offered to help promote RMMH by bringing back our discount offer to all Triumph owners and RAT members for all tours, not just the one organized ride at the beginning of the season.’

Preaching to the converted is one thing, but did the inclusion of Triumph motorcycles lead to any sales for the British marque in Canada or beyond? ‘As for whether I think that our customers leave the tours with the intention of buying a Triumph after riding them on our tours, I would say for some of them it’s a definite “yes”, confirms Tyler. ‘I have personally seen testimonials, notes and comments from our guests saying they had such a great time, when they got back home they ran out to their local Triumph dealership and bought the machine they enjoyed the holiday on. Also remember that a good portion of our guests are already Triumph owners too, and after trying the models we had on fleet, some of them would buy a second bike.’

So, while RMMH continues its good relationship with Triumph in North America and Canada, they are also exploring other avenues with new manufacturers.

The Rocky Mountain Motorcycle Holiday company offers ten tours for the 2008 season. These cover most of Western Canada and the West Coast of the United States, The company prides itself in listening to its customers to introduce new locations and routes. Tours range from seven to 15 days and are priced between C$3,950 and C$13,950 and do not include flights.

‘Do our customers leave the tours with the intention of buying a Triumph? For some of them it’s a definite yes’

Testimonials

Eva & I would like to thank you and the rest of the Rocky Mountain Team for making our holiday so enjoyable. The tour was organized with enough attention to detail to run flawlessly but without so many restrictions as to make us feel like #5 in a row of ducklings.

We had a fantastic time and would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Rocky Mountain Motorcycle Holidays to anyone. I’m writing a letter to Bike magazine to tell them of our very positive experience. All in all, the holiday rates up there with our honeymoon!

Best wishes to all.

John & Eva Soones, London
